So I compulsively read books about girls who DID have ponies.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no big secret to the &#8220;pony book&#8221; formula: a girl with no pony desperately wants a pony and through a stroke of galloping good luck, gets a pony, as well as a blue ribbon in the big show. You might not have a pony of your own, but you<em> could <\/em>live vicariously through a lucky girl who did. I knew I was never going to be lucky enough to be smack dab in the middle of a Nancy Drew style mystery, but a pony&#8230;.that was a dream I kept well stoked. There simply was nothing more magical than the prospect of owning <em>a pony.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My pony book obsession started with a single flimsy scholastic paperback. Every year, my extended family and I would spend 2 glorious weeks at a summer &#8220;resort&#8221; \u00a0&#8211; aka hillbilly housekeeping cottage motel &#8211; in the Poconos. Ramshackle particle board &#8220;cottages&#8221;, shuffleboard court, baseball diamond, unheated swimming pool, fetid fishing hole, and a \u00a0makeshift &#8220;lending library&#8221; &#8211; little more than a small shelf \u00a0&#8211; that housed that one very important book.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13296\" title=\"$(KGrHqR,!jQE3NJUJBlrBOIfV+THOg~~0_35\" src=\"http:\/\/teensleuth.com\/hauntedlibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/KGrHqRjQE3NJUJBlrBOIfV+THOg0_35.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>It was called <em>&#8220;Lost Pony&#8221; <\/em>and it was horsey-heroin: East Coast country gentry, twins, and a pony. Jan and Jay <em>really <\/em>want a pony, but the folks say no! There&#8217;s no real reason for them <em>not<\/em> to have a pony &#8211; they live on acres of land &#8220;where grass grew especially to a pony&#8217;s taste&#8221;, with &#8220;a lovely big box stall&#8221;. Lo and behold, here comes a pony &#8211; riderless, with a rope &#8217;round its neck. And not some old piece of junk, but a fancy, bright chestnut pony with a creamy mane and &#8220;saucy&#8221; face.<\/p>\n<p>To whom does this lost pony belong? No matter. &#8220;Finders Keepers!&#8221; shrieks Jan, and soon the pony is frisking merrily in their pasture, knee deep in clover. The twins gussy him up for the big pony show and win everything, because, apparently, this pony is the\u00a0Greatest Show Pony in the East! Alas, the pony&#8217;s owner recognize\u00a0him and takes him back. Eventually, the benevolent owner drops the Greatest Show Pony in the East off at the twin&#8217;s doorstep with a note: &#8220;Somebody&#8217;s Pony is yours&#8221;. \u00a0To a kid who lived for having a stray pony wander in to the alley behind my\u00a0house, this was just <em>too much.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><em>Lost Pony<\/em> led me down the garden path of pony books. The story is told from the point of view of 8 fed-up ponies. The ponies of &#8220;Daisy Dedleigh-Sirkett\u2019s Dundreary Riding School&#8221; are all on the market, and scheming to obtain the best possible little girls to look after them.\u00a0Old Smokey and Prune debate the attributes of the perfect girl:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13413 alignright\" title=\"karabuckteeth\" src=\"http:\/\/teensleuth.com\/hauntedlibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/karabuckteeth-300x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/hauntedlibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/karabuckteeth-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/hauntedlibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/karabuckteeth-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/hauntedlibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/karabuckteeth.jpg 663w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nine years old, standing about &#8220;15 hooves&#8221;, long legs, straight brown hair, generous, kind and intelligent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em style=\"text-align: center;\">That was me! (see: right)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em> <\/em><em>Clearly,<\/em> I needed a pony.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><em>Ponies Plot<\/em> <\/em>ushered me the magical world of\u00a0<em><em>The\u00a0British Pony Book and<\/em><\/em> opened my eyes to the glory and wonder of the British riding institutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u201cBoth girls shared a single passion &#8212; ponies.\u00a0 And with both of them the main use to which brains and tact and energy were put was How and Where to get more riding.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13336\" title=\"84264\" src=\"http:\/\/teensleuth.com\/hauntedlibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/84264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/hauntedlibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/84264.jpg 345w, https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/hauntedlibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/84264-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/p>\n<div>That&#8217;s from Monica Edwards\u2019,\u00a0<em>Wish for a Pony.<\/em> Tamzin Grey does NOT have a pony. She is POOR. This being England, Tam&#8217;s mother naturally says: \u00a0&#8220;Q<em>uite the worst thing about being poor is that you can&#8217;t buy a pony for a child who loves them as much as Tamzin&#8221;.<\/em> Someone knows someone who knows a man whose beautiful daughter was paralyzed from a fall from her pony, and now wants to shoot the pony. Tamzin of course gets the pony &#8211; not just\u00a0<em>any <\/em>pony \u00a0&#8211; a spectacular, 14.2 hand Anglo-Arab named <em>Cascade. <\/em>In British Pony Book World, even if you are poor as dirt, a dusty old nag isn&#8217;t good enough, you have the<em> best pony i<\/em>n the world.<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-13911\" barn; Shasta (right), Mittens, Tinkerbell, Nutmeg, Shadow, Muffet, Dixie&#8230;but none of them were <em>mine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Christine, Diana and Josephine Pullein-Thompson are pony author sisters, Christine\u00a0being the most prolific with more than\u00a0<em>100\u00a0books <\/em>to her name.\u00a0The lives depicted in her books were Tessa&#8217;s dad &#8211;\u00a0Colonel Compton, a widower &#8211;\u00a0can&#8217;t afford a fancy show pony, so Tessa must make do with a\u00a0humble nag name Dusty. Dad teaches Tessa how to groom and train Dusty so that he&#8217;s suitable for the local shows <em>&#8216;without disgracing the family&#8217;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/teensleuth.com\/hauntedlibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Unknown.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13874\" title=\"Unknown\" src=\"http:\/\/teensleuth.com\/hauntedlibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Unknown.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In <em>Coco the Gift Horse,<\/em> Jane and Jeremy have outgrown Falla, but they can\u2019t afford a new, larger pony! Then they stumble onto a pony named Coco, whose\u00a0owner says is \u201cgorn in the\u2019ead,\u201d and gives him to Jane and Jeremy.\u00a0In <em>The Lost Pony,<\/em> Janice and Mick long for a pony of their own, and\u00a0when they are sent away to foster parents in the\u00a0country they find one in the cabbage patch.\u00a0In <em>She Wanted a Pony<\/em>, Ruth Philpotts is from a rich family who moves to the country because it\u2019s\u00a0what their rich friends do. Her parents buy her a pony named Socks. The stories weren&#8217;t inventive, but as long as the main ingredients were there; pony, girl; then I was satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to explain\u00a0to my mom that in England \u00a0it is a girls&#8217;\u00a0right &#8211;\u00a0not a\u00a0privilege &#8211; to have a pony of her own. The whole town is pony-mad with perpetual shows and garden parties. There&#8217;s a&#8221;Best Dressed Child&#8221; contest where girls wear flowing green velvet coats with ostrich feathers and scarlet jodhpurs with white Hussar tunics. Jill has a richer, bookish cousin Cecelia who Jill consider an &#8220;absolute blot&#8221;.
