This sounds appropriate \u2014 exciting, in fact \u2014 except that the cover is\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.co.uk\/Search\/Search.aspx?contractUrl=2&amp;language=en-GB&amp;family=creative&amp;assetType=image&amp;excludenudity=true&amp;p=woman+powder+compact+1950s\" target=\"new\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">an ultra-feminine stock photo<\/span><\/a><\/strong> of a woman applying makeup (pictured above, right).<\/p>\n<p>The London Review of Books\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/blog\/2013\/01\/31\/fatema-ahmed\/silly-covers-for-lady-novelists\/\">weighs in<\/a> <\/strong>on the controversy:<\/p>\n<p>It should be possible to see \u2018The Bell Jar\u2019\u00a0as a deadpan younger cousin of Walker Percy\u2019s \u2018The Moviegoer,\u2019 or even William Burroughs\u2019s \u2018Naked Lunch.\u2019 But that\u2019s not the way Faber are marketing it. The anniversary edition fits into the depressing trend for treating fiction by women as a genre,\u00a0which no man could be expected to read and which women will only know is meant for them if they can see a woman on the cover.
