{"id":8128,"date":"2011-09-11T10:39:05","date_gmt":"2011-09-11T18:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/?p=8128"},"modified":"2011-09-11T10:39:05","modified_gmt":"2011-09-11T18:39:05","slug":"8128","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/?p=8128","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8129\" title=\"FiremenSaving11th\" src=\"http:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/FiremenSaving11th.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"301\" \/><\/p>\n<p>FDNY chaplain\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/saintmychaljudge.blogspot.com\/\">Father Mychal Judge<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0&#8220;The Fireman&#8217;s Friar&#8221; &#8211; continued to offer absolution, prayers, and assistance in the lobby of the WTC as death rained all around him, until his own death, felled by flying debris when the south tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0his role as official fire chaplain, Father Judge rushed to the scene at the WTC, where he administered Last Rites to the dead lying on the streets. As firefighters rushed into the inferno, Father Judge was pronouncing absolution, administering the Sacrament of the Sick and Last Rites, knowing they would not return.\u00a0When commanders gave orders to evacuate the building, Father Judge refused to abandon the hundreds of firefighters still trapped inside saying,\u00a0<em>&#8220;My work here is not finished&#8221;. <\/em>A NYPD lieutenant found Father Judge&#8217;s body in the rubble and, along with two firemen and two civilians,\u00a0gently carried him body through the dust and smoke to\u00a0nearby St. Peter&#8217;s Church, and lovingly laid him on the altar, covering him with a sheet on which they placed his stole and his fire badge.
