A place of epic visual scale where the modern world falls away, out of the human realm and into the deep geology of the earth. Layer upon layer of the planet\u2019s crust revealed, \u00a0the stuff that is under our very feet as we go about our day is laid bare here. 277 miles long, 18 miles wide and over a mile deep, cutting\u00a0down through more than two billion years of geologic time, it is a place that can still drop the most jaded of jaws.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30832 alignleft\" title=\"PHP49DBBEAE1D46B\" src=\"http:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/PHP49DBBEAE1D46B.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"306\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/PHP49DBBEAE1D46B.jpg 382w, https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/PHP49DBBEAE1D46B-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Outside the south entrance, the kind of development symbolized by a hulking, two-story\u00a0Fred Flintstone cutout prevails over the barren landscape,\u00a0calling out &#8221;Yabba-dabba-doo&#8221; to motorists looking for a campground. This is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bedrockaz.com\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Bedrock City of Arizona<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-30827\" title=\"bedrock-city\" src=\"http:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/bedrock-city1-1024x636.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"517\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/bedrock-city1-1024x636.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/bedrock-city1-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/bedrock-city1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" \/>The Flintstones-themed amusement park, stands out on a flat, windswept, rocky plateau south of the Grand Canyon. It \u00a0opened in 1972 &#8211; six years after the animated show ended its 166-episode run &#8211; during the\u00a0height of the Route 66\u00a0roadside attraction craze. Apparently there was a time when Bedrock city was actually\u00a0a popular stop for\u00a0tourists on their way to the Grand Canyon, and guys in Fred and Barney bopped about. Today, it sits isolated in the middle of the Arizona desert, the scratchy Flintstones theme song soundtrack on continuous loop broadcast over the park\u2019s tinny loudspeakers, echoing eerily between the dusty, dilapidating houses of Bedrock\u2019s famous residents from a bygone era.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30842\" title=\"2941081466_c9a60ced54_o.jpg.CROP.promo-large2\" src=\"http:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2941081466_c9a60ced54_o.jpg.CROP_.promo-large2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2941081466_c9a60ced54_o.jpg.CROP_.promo-large2.jpg 920w, https:\/\/teensleuth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2941081466_c9a60ced54_o.jpg.CROP_.promo-large2-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From a distance, Bedrock City appears abandoned.\u00a0The sun-scorched concrete and the paucity of vegetation makes Bedrock City seem like an encampment of apocalypse survivors, or one of those ghost towns built by the military to test the effectiveness of atomic bombs. On the other hand, the sun-grizzled quality and the isolation give the place an authentic Stone Age feel. That Bedrock City is apparently in better shape. America is represented as a kind of dystopian\u00a0Disneyland, where leisure and history combine in theme parks for the rich while the rest of humanity fights over scarce resources. If you are fundamentally concerned with the question of how we can truly know history and how can we divert\u00a0history\u2019s devious capacity to obscure the truth, look no further than Bedrock City. Bedrock City is the offspring of Saunders&#8217; &#8220;degraded cosmos&#8221;, \u00a0sadness and the carnivalesque, a \u00a0ghost of its former self, neglected and surreal, hammering home the poverty of a simulated existence.<\/p>\n<p>Bedrock City went on sale yesterday. Its sale\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bedrockaz.com\/images\/subjects\/for-sale\/Bedrock-Brochure-2014-FSBO.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">brochure<\/span><\/a> boasts it is the perfect place for casinos, resorts, time shares, or just a nice place to settle down when you want to escape the city grind. It also seems like the best place to start \u00a0indoctrinating some spree killers since Manson took over an <a href=\"http:\/\/la.curbed.com\/archives\/2014\/10\/the_story_of_the_abandoned_movie_ranch_where_the_manson_family_launched_helter_skelter.php\">old Western movie set.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I guess there is a certain comfort to be taken in a place that so sharply illustrates the end of the rope. Where even our shrines to the past &#8211; even a fake, TV past &#8211; \u00a0are battered, decrepit and all but abandoned.
