Today Mark and I pack up the family Prius and head up the California Coast. Destination: Carmel- by-the-Sea, founded in 1602 by Carmelite friars. I am joining the likes of Sinclair Lewis and Jack London and hole myself up in a cabin to force some progress on my novel. I have lived in California 20 years and have traveled up and down this coast, often alone, enough times that I have developed a strangely personal relationship with this tri-polar State, that is bigger than France and Japan, bigger than 85 of the smallest nations in the world, fatter than Chile, and far more heterogeneous than any of those places.

Will check in again at the first “tourist rest stop”.
